Medicare Supplemental

Our Favorite Medicare Supplemental Plans (Medigap) & Insurers

We strongly recommend Medigap Plans G and N because we feel they offer a best value Medicare supplement. With Medicare Supplemental plans, the benefits are standardized for all insurers. This means that with every Medicare Supplemental Insurer who offers a Plan G or N, the Medicare Supplemental Insurance plan benefits are exactly the same.

Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan G – Key points:

  • There is an annual $240 Medicare Part B deductible.  After this deductible is met, there are no other charges for Medicare covered services.
  • Medicare is primary payer and the plan is the secondary payer.
  • No medical co-pays for any Medicare services.
  • Good at any doc/hospital in the entire USA as long as they accept Medicare –no referrals, no claims forms, no paperwork.

Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan N – Key points:

  • $240 calendar year Medicare Part B Deductible
  • $20 maximum co-pay per doctor visit
  • $50 co-pay per emergency room visit
  • Possible 15% Part B Excess Charge if you use a non-Medicare doctor who agrees to accept Medicare for your needs.  Not allowed in PA.

Our Favorite Medicare Supplemental Insurers

  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Humana
  • Independence Blue Cross
  • UnitedHealthCare Medicare Solutions
  • Highmark Blue Cross
  • New Era

Why our favorites?: Very good value from these insurers; excellent customer service; strong financial stability.

When choosing a high-quality Medicare Supplemental insurer, does one-size fit all?: No, which is why we research multiple Medicare Supplement insurers to find best value.

ABOUT ENROLLMENT TIMING: Medicare Supplemental plans are easiest to enroll in during “open enrollment” and “guarantee issue periods,” which generally include:

  1. The first six month period that starts with the first day of the month when Medicare Part B begins
  2. If you are age 65 or older, already enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B, currently have health insurance through a group plan, but are losing access to this plan
  3. Are not yet age 65, but are qualifying for Medicare Parts A & B because of a disability
  4. You joined a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO, etc.) at age 65, when you were first eligible for Medicare and within the first year of joining this Medicare Advantage plan, you decided to switch to Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplemental Plan

“John was highly recommended to us by our family physician, who is also a Medicare client of John’s. We found John to be helpful, reassuring, and knowledgeable. John alleviated all our anxieties here. It is comforting to know that John is just a phone call away. Thanks, John.”
